WHAT WE DO

Arriving before the first bell and leaving after the last student goes home, City Year Milwaukee’s AmeriCorps members serve full-time in Milwaukee Public Schools to support students in reaching their full potential. City Year AmeriCorps members serve alongside school leaders and teachers to provide support on a whole school, classroom, and individual student basis.

A Day in the Life

While the exact daily schedule varies from school to school, each team follows the same initiatives and programming.

7:30am Opening Circle: Teams arrive at school and begin each day with an opening circle, a City Year tradition to become centered on the day ahead. Joys and Appreciations are shared, announcements are made, and teams set their intention for the day.

8:00am Power Greeting: Corps members line up to power greet students every morning with high fives and "G-o-o-d M-o-r-n-I-n-g" chants.

9:15am Interventions: In addition to supporting in the classroom, corps member have a list of about six students they specifically work with academically. These students are called their "focus list." Everyday, corps members do small group interventions or one-on-one tutoring with these students, focusing on strengthening their math and/or English language art skills.

10:30am Attendance & Positive Behavior: In addition to academic focus list students, corps members have an attendance or positive behavior focus list as well. Each week, corps members set attendance or leadership goals with students to encourage students to work towards reaching their full potential.

11am Phone Calls Home: When students are absent or show positive behavior, corps members call home to check on them and share a child's success with their family.

1pm Impact Manager Check In: Providing professional development to corps members is a priority for City Year. Every week corps members meet with their Impact Manager to receive support and feedback about attaining their personal and professional goals.

1:30pm Coordinator Role: Every corps member is assigned a "Coordinator Role." There are monthly meetings where corps members learn about updates and projects related to their role. Afterwards, they share this information with their team. Josie is an Events and External Affairs coordinator and is working on writing her team's newsletter that goes to community sponsors.

2pm School Tours: The best way to understand what City Year does is to see it in action. Potential partners are invited to do a school tour, and corps members support in leading these tours.

3pm Afterschool: Corps members support the Community Learning Centers that run most schools' afterschool programming. Corps members provide homework assistance, support enrichment activities, and help plan family engagement nights.

5:00pm Closing Circle: After the last student goes home, teams gather in a closing circle to reflect on the day and prepare for their next day of service.

Serving as a City Year AmeriCorps member on a diverse team is a complex and challenging role with varied responsibilities designed to help students develop into all they can be and to help them build the social-emotional and academic skills to achieve their goals.

City Year Milwaukee believes a zip code should not determine the educational opportunities a child receives, however, many students face obstacles that interfere with their ability to arrive at school ready and able to learn, and even the best teachers and administrators struggle to provide for every student's unique needs. City Year Milwaukee serves to fill this gap with over 100 AmeriCorps members serving in 13 elementary, middle, and high schools throughout Milwaukee.
