Below are resources to complete your Pre-Service Assignment. Please write a 2-3 page (double spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman font) essay answering at least one of the questions in each category. You may write more if you would like, this should be a reflection on the readings within each of the sections. Email your assignment to Natalie Fluker, nfluker@cityyear.org no later than July 7th. City Year Culture & Corps Experience

  • What are you most excited about in terms of the work that City Year does?
  • What aspect of a corps members day did you learn about while looking at “Day in the Life”? What would you like to learn more about?
  • Which support resources will you refer back to throughout your service year? Were there any supports you were unaware of before?
  • What did you learn through the process of making a budget on your stipend?

Diversity & Leadership

  • Even our youngest students have a profound understanding of racial issues in the world - how will you engage with our students in conversations around race, either as a white person or as a fellow person of color? How will you incorporate cultural relevancy into your small group sessions with students?
  • When reading the articles about white privilege and white fragility, what thoughts arose? Did anything surprise you? What was eye-opening for you? How have you seen white privilege and white fragility in your life, whether you were on the receiving end or you were the one exercising it?

Milwaukee and Education

  • What did you learn about Milwaukee or the education system through the material?
  • What did you already know about Milwaukee and its education system?
  • Did you have any preconceived notions around Milwaukee or the education system? Did you learn something contradictory to those thoughts?
  • What surprised you or shocked you?
  • What didn’t surprise you?
  • What did you learn that you will bring into the classroom this year?

Preparing to Work with Students

  • What experiences do you have already working with young people?
  • What do you see being the hardest part working with young people?
  • What questions do you have about the City Year model, whole class whole child?
  • What are your opinions on teaching grit in the classroom?
